As a Borderlinx customer, you know that a simple way to save on international shipping fees is through our Package Repacking service. To give you a better understanding of how it can save you money, we created a quick example below.
Package Repacking: How It Works
Package Repacking is slightly different than other services we offer because your involvement isn’t needed to activate it–the service is automatically applied to any packages that qualify.
So how exactly does a package qualify for Package Repacking? Sometimes, retailers will pack items in larger boxes than necessary. Our staff will identify these boxes when they arrive to our warehouse and then place your item in smaller packaging. Your items will be placed in either padded envelopes or trimmed boxes.
When assessing shipping fees, our carriers calculate costs by either volumetric weight or dead weight, whichever is greater. Volumetric weight is simply the amount of space the package takes up on an aircraft or vehicle. It’s calculated by multiplying the length, width and height of a package together and then dividing it by a volumetric factor. The higher the volumetric weight, the more space it occupies. When packages contain a lot of negative space, it can create a higher volumetric weight than necessary, meaning you might end up paying more money in shipping than you should.
Let’s take a look at a sample shipment we put together from the United States to our warehouse in Hong Kong. In the image below, we have an unopened box with the following details:
Weight: 5 lbs.
Dimensions: 15”x 12”x 10”
Volumetric Weight: 13.01 lbs.
Cost from USA to HK: $82.01
Below is the opened box, and as you can see, there is a lot of empty space. Even when protective stuffing is inserted, there is still room to downsize the package.
Now let’s take a look at how Borderlinx would repackage the box.
Savings with Package Repacking
In the image below, we took the same box and cut it down to better fit around the contents inside. The repacked box now has the following details:
Weight: 5 lbs.
Dimensions: 15”x 12”x 5″
Volumetric Weight: 6.51 lbs.
Cost from the US to HK: $53.06
The image below shows a side by side comparison of boxes before repacking (left) and after (right).
The dead weight of the package remained the same (5 lbs.), but the volumetric weight was higher so costs were determined by assessing the latter. By cutting down the size of the box, Borderlinx reduced the package’s volumetric weight by 50%, from 13.01 pounds to 6.5 pounds. Therefore, fees were reduced from US$82.01 to US$53.06–that’s $29 in savings!
How to Opt Out of Package Repacking
If for any reason you don’t want our Package Repacking service applied to one of your shipments, just sign in to your Borderlinx account and locate the Account Settings box in your dashboard. Select “Do not repack my shipments” and click on “Save changes.”
Borderlinx cannot repack shipments that are already gift wrapped or that come in designer boxes. Additional restrictions apply. For more details, please visit our FAQ page.
